Did you ever stop to think about how chatty flowers can be? They really have a lot to say!
Now you’re looking at me with a quizzical look on your face. No, I’m not crazy, just hear me out.
Let’s think for a minute about all the reasons you send flowers or buy flowers for yourself or others.
For instance, your best friend has a birthday- you decide to send her sunflowers because they are her favorite, but also to say “Happy Birthday!!! You’re my best friend and you mean so much to me!!” The sunflowers are telling your best friend that she is important in your life and you want to celebrate this happy day with her! See how talkative those sunflowers are?
What about the husband who sends his wife 15 red roses on their 15th wedding anniversary? First off- brownie points for that hubby who remembered how many years they’ve been married!! But those roses are speaking to his wife with a message that says, “Happy Anniversary my sweet wife, I love you so much! You are the best thing that ever happened to me!” The roses spoke sweet words of love to a very lucky woman. They are saying that her husband appreciates their life together and the many years that they have loved one another.
Oh dear, your Mother just took a spill and now she has to take it a little easier. You- being her favorite- decide to send her a large bouquet of lilies because she had lilies in her garden for many years. Those lovely lilies said to your Mom, “I’m sorry your feelin bad Mom, next time, maybe skip the dip when you and Dad are out dancing at the country bar.” The lilies with the gift of gab just told your Mom, I know you’re hurting and I feel bad that your suffering, know that I love you and I worry about you. Maybe next time your Mom and Dad will take some dance lessons before they hit the floor- literally! Your Mom is spunkier that you realized- who knew!
Flowers can also be very comforting during times of loss. When a family friend passes and you send flowers to the services your flowers are speaking for you. The bouquet is saying to your friends, “I am so sorry for your loss. We will miss them so much! I have so many fond memories and stories that bring me joy when I think of them. Know that you and your family are in my heart at this time and we will be here for you whenever you need extra comfort.” Flowers can have a powerful message.
Those pretty petals are speaking words with their presence. They are telling a story, they are showing emotion, they are easing pain, they are giving a laugh and brightening a day.
So when you step into a flower shop and see an arrangement and something about it just “speaks to you”- you know that feeling-- those flowers are speaking to you! And they have something to say FOR you! Perk up an ear- listen- and say Hello!
With kindness,
~~ Kim
